The Safety Record
The safety of BC30™ has been documented in both acute and chronic toxicity trials and found to be well tolerated in humans with doses as high as 9 × 10¹²/day. BC30™ has GRAS (Generally Recognised as Safe) status by the FDA in the USA, Halal certification, and levels up to 2 × 10⁹ CFU per serving are approved for use. The GI-PRO™ snap contains 2 million CFU (2 × 10⁶) per serving — well within the evidence-supported safe and effective dose range.
The Probiotic

BC30™ — THE WORLD'S MOST
VALIDATED SPORE-FORMING PROBIOTIC

Not all probiotics are equal. BC30™ is differentiated by its spore-forming mechanism, stability, and the depth of its clinical evidence base. This is what earns the claim — and what the honey carries.

Strain Identification
Heyndrickxia coagulans GBI-30, 6086®
Previously named Bacillus coagulans. A lactic-acid, spore-forming, Gram-positive bacterium. The spore-forming mechanism is the critical differentiator: BC30™ spores are highly resistant to heat and survive in diverse food matrices, making this a genuinely shelf-stable probiotic that remains viable in a honey delivery format (Soares et al., 2019). BC30™ is a registered trademark of Kerry Group plc.
Why Spore-Forming Matters
Pharmacokinetic studies found that H. coagulans GBI-30, 6086 survive gastric and bile acids in the stomach, with 51% of the oral dose reaching the intestine (Cao, Yu, Liu, Zhao, Zhang, Zhai & Chen, 2020). Most probiotic strains do not survive this passage at meaningful levels. BC30™ spores also survive well in various foodstuffs — making the honey snap format an ideal delivery vehicle, not a compromise.

Mechanism of Action

H. coagulans help create an anaerobic and acidic intestinal environment, making it inhospitable to various pathogens, which promotes the growth of more beneficial probiotics such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium (Cao et al., 2020). BC30™ can also produce antimicrobial compounds which hinder pathogenic bacterial growth.

H. coagulans GBI-30, 6086 has been scientifically proven to promote intestinal digestion and nutrient absorption through its ability to produce a variety of enzymes (Cao et al., 2020). These enzymes degrade carbohydrates and proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids and promote their metabolism and absorption — a mechanism with direct relevance to both everyday gut health and sports performance recovery.

BC30™ has been shown to normalise the number of splenic lymphocytes, macrophages and T-lymphocytes and immune system functionality (Cao et al., 2020). Probiotics play a role in human immunologic homeostasis through their interaction with the gut microbiome — and the GI tract is the primary site of immune system interface.

"The improved gut microbiome results in improved gastrointestinal and digestive health. GBI-30 has been shown to alleviate symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), decrease gut discomfort and reduce bloating and gas." — Dr Lillian Morton PhD, GI-PRO Scientific Monograph (2025)

Over 60% of elderly patients experience gastrointestinal complaints including indigestion, abdominal pain, flatulence and GERD (Kumar et al., 2020). Dysbiosis in the microbiota has been implicated as an underlying pathogenesis of indigestion, which in turn results in malabsorption of nutrients and compromised immunity — making a validated, food-format probiotic like GI-PRO™ a compelling preventive and therapeutic option.

The Honey Carrier

NOT A PASSIVE CARRIER.
AN ACTIVE CO-FACTOR.

The honey in GI-PRO™ is not a flavour vehicle. It is a bioactive delivery system — with its own prebiotic function, polyphenol profile, and synergistic interaction with the BC30™ probiotic.

Mānuka Honey (16+ UMF)
Mānuka honey has significantly higher polyphenolic content than other nectar honeys and a high antioxidant capacity. Its antimicrobial properties — attributed to methylglyoxal (MGO), flavonoids, and phenolic acids — create an ideal probiotic delivery environment, protecting the BC30™ spores from oxidative stress while simultaneously exerting their own direct prebiotic and anti-inflammatory effects in the gut.
Caffeic acid Quercetin Pinobanksin Chrysin Pinocembrin Galangin Ferulic acid
Rewarewa Honey
Rewarewa (Knightia excelsa) is a native NZ honey with notably high levels of quinic acid — an organic acid present in several medicinal plants shown to exert antibacterial, antiviral, and antidiabetic effects. Rewarewa has demonstrated the ability to reduce both inflammatory leukocyte infiltration and AA-induced oedema in vitro, indicating it can affect multiple inflammatory targets simultaneously. Combined with mānuka, it creates a native NZ honey matrix that no international competitor can replicate.

The Prebiotic Function of Honey

New Zealand honey contains carbohydrates that exert a prebiotic effect in the human gut. Honey has been shown to act as a substrate for Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli in the colon, and the non-digestible sugars in honey reach the colon where they serve as a nutritional source for these beneficial bacteria (Hajam, 2024). The polyphenols and sugars in honey synergistically interact in the colon, creating an environment that proliferates beneficial bacteria, and inhibits pathogens in the gut (Hajam, 2024).

The polyphenols in honey also exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects which positively affect the gut environment. A bidirectional relationship exists between the gut microbiome and polyphenols — the presence of polyphenols and their metabolites in the colon directly impact the health of the colon by modulating the microbiome composition (Fraga et al., 2019). Honey also contains minerals (potassium, calcium, magnesium) and vitamins (ascorbic acid, B-vitamins) which contribute additional nutritional value within the same one-snap daily dose.

The Synergy

PREBIOTIC + PROBIOTIC.
NATURE + SCIENCE.

GI-PRO™ is designed around a specific and scientifically grounded synergistic mechanism. The honey feeds the bacteria. The bacteria transform the gut environment. The result is measurably better than either component alone.

Step 01 — Prebiotic
Honey Prepares the Gut
Non-digestible sugars and polyphenols in mānuka and rewarewa honey reach the colon, acting as substrate for Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. The honey creates an optimal environment — acidic, antimicrobial against pathogens — before the BC30™ spores activate.
Step 02 — Probiotic
BC30™ Activates & Proliferates
BC30™ spores survive the gastric and bile acid environment (51% reaching the intestine), then activate in the nutrient-rich prebiotic substrate the honey has created. BC30™ produces antimicrobial compounds, normalises lymphocytes, and begins enzyme production for protein degradation.
Step 03 — Outcomes
Measurable Health Benefits
Improved digestive function. Reduced bloating, discomfort, and IBS symptoms. Enhanced protein and nutrient absorption. Improved immune homeostasis. Beneficial microbiota balance. Each outcome is independently documented in peer-reviewed RCTs.
"Honey and BC30™ should theoretically act synergistically to enhance or improve gut function and/or reduce digestive issues. The combination of honey's prebiotic effects and BC30™'s probiotic effects means GI-PRO™ provides two substrates that enhance the gastrointestinal environment." — Dr Lillian Morton PhD, GI-PRO Scientific Monograph (2025)
Active RCT — Evidence Generation in Progress
Mānuka Performance is conducting a randomised control trial in adults to evaluate and assess the effects of GI-PRO™ on digestive symptoms, digestive function, and mood in adults. Future research will explore changes to microbial species and blood parameters associated with inflammation and immunity. This trial will generate the first direct evidence for the combined honey-BC30™ synergy in a controlled human study — adding to the foundational 45+ studies already supporting BC30™ individually.
